Air pollution levels across several major Indian cities have surged once again, raising serious health concerns and prompting authorities to consider stricter control measures. According to recent monitoring data, air quality in cities including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Bengaluru has deteriorated to “poor” and “very poor” categories over the past week.
Environmental experts attribute the spike to a combination of vehicular emissions, construction dust, industrial activity, and seasonal factors such as low wind speed and temperature inversion. In northern India, the lingering impact of stubble burning in neighboring states has further worsened the situation.
Health Risks on the Rise
Doctors warn that prolonged exposure to polluted air can lead to respiratory illnesses, heart disease, asthma, and reduced lung function, especially among children and the elderly. Hospitals in metropolitan areas have reported a noticeable increase in patients complaining of breathing difficulties, eye irritation, and persistent coughs.
“Even short-term exposure to high pollution levels can significantly impact vulnerable populations,” said a senior pulmonologist at a government hospital in Delhi.
Government Measures and Advisories
State governments have issued advisories urging residents to limit outdoor activities, wear protective masks, and use air purifiers indoors wherever possible. In Delhi-NCR, authorities are considering temporary restrictions on construction activities and implementing vehicle control measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
Meanwhile, environmental groups have renewed calls for long-term solutions, including improved public transport, stricter industrial emission norms, promotion of electric vehicles, and increased green cover in urban areas.
The Way Forward
Experts stress that tackling air pollution requires coordinated action from governments, industries, and citizens alike. While emergency measures may provide temporary relief, sustainable urban planning and consistent enforcement of environmental regulations are essential for lasting improvement.
As pollution levels continue to fluctuate, residents are advised to stay informed through official air quality updates and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health.
