The long-awaited Bhopal Metro Rail Project is being formally inaugurated today, marking a major milestone in the capital city’s urban transportation development. The opening ceremony is taking place at the Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Centre (Minto Hall) and is being attended by senior leaders including Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal Khattar.
Following the formal ceremony, officials will proceed to Subhash Nagar Metro Station to flag off the first metro train, which will embark on a symbolic inaugural journey towards AIIMS station, showcasing the readiness of the system for public use.
🛤️ Commercial Operations to Begin on December 21
While the inauguration is being held today, authorities have confirmed that commercial passenger operations will begin on Sunday, December 21, 2025. This means residents of Bhopal will be able to use the metro for regular travel starting on that date.
The first operational stretch is the Orange Line priority corridor, which spans approximately 6.22 km and includes eight elevated stations, connecting key city locations such as Subhash Nagar, Kendriya Vidyalaya, MP Nagar, Rani Kamalapati and AIIMS.
🚆 Bhopal’s Entry Into Metro Network
With the commercial launch of the metro, Bhopal becomes the second city in Madhya Pradesh, after Indore, to introduce metro rail services. This development is expected to significantly improve everyday commuting, ease road traffic congestion, and contribute to reducing pollution in the city.
📊 Project Background
The Bhopal Metro project, also called Bhoj Metro, represents years of planning and construction aimed at modernising the city’s public transport infrastructure. The metro project is being developed in phases, with the current priority corridor awaiting full integration into the larger network over coming years.
The metro is anticipated to bring enhanced connectivity, shorter travel times, and a more comfortable passenger experience for daily commuters, office-goers, students, and residents from all walks of life.
