A tragic train accident occurred early on Saturday, December 20, 2025, when a high-speed passenger train collided with a herd of wild elephants in Assam’s Hojai district, resulting in the deaths of at least seven elephants and injuries to a calf. Although the impact caused several coaches to derail, all passengers remained safe, officials confirmed.

The Sairang–New Delhi Rajdhani Express, one of India’s premier passenger trains, was traveling through a forested section between Jamunamukh and Kampur under the Lumding Division of the Northeast Frontier Railway when the accident took place around 2:17 a.m. according to railway officials. The train struck a herd of elephants that had come onto the tracks.
Despite the loco pilot’s efforts to apply emergency brakes upon sighting the herd, the collision could not be avoided. The force of the impact caused the locomotive and five coaches to derail, disrupting train services along the route. However, there were no reported injuries among passengers or crew members.

Forest authorities confirmed that seven wild Asiatic elephants died on the spot, and a young calf was critically injured. Veterinarians were called to assess the injured elephant, and plans were made to bury the deceased elephants near the site with assistance from heavy machinery.
Passagers from the affected coaches were safely evacuated and accommodated in other train compartments before the Rajdhani Express continued its journey towards New Delhi.
